CHAPTER 11

"WHAT'S ALL THIS racket?" asked Veronica with a frown as she handed over a bag for life to a woman with two excited children already delving into the groceries while they popped the last of their quiche into their eager mouths.

"We need a word. It's urgent," gasped Melody, watching in horror as the children were given another slice.

"There might be an issue with the quiche," I whispered, glancing at the woman and children and shaking my head.

Veronica nodded, then told the children, "Sorry, but the quiche is off," and grabbed for it. It was no use, and the young ones stepped away and hurriedly gobbled the cheesy treat. I had to admit, it looked lovely, and with no soggy bottom that I could see.

Distracted, their mother didn't even notice, and wandered off, the children chasing ahead after poking their tongues out at me.

"Is there much left?" I asked.

"What's going on?" Veronica had a word with the woman helping her, then came from behind the table and took us to one side. "Is there a problem?"

"We got in a panic and wondered if maybe Del had been poisoned first. Maybe someone nobbled the quiche and that was why he… Um, never mind about the details, but we need to check everyone's alright. Has anyone felt poorly?"

"Anyone collapse or have a funny turn?" asked Melody, eyes roaming like mine, trying to check on everyone at once.

"You two need to calm down. Everything is fine. Nearly all the fresh food has gone. Much of it eaten here. The number of people we've had already means nobody got that much, but they said it was lovely. And besides, haven't you tried it yourselves? I know you kept a little something back to give Del a proper send off in the way he'd have wanted."

Melody and I exchanged a guilty look, and I admitted, "We have, and it was the best. Del was a true artisan. I, er, I think we might have got carried away and thought the worst. We were trying to figure this out, and when we thought about the fresh food, we suspected maybe he'd been poisoned before he was stabbed. I guess we were wrong."

"If he was poisoned, it could have been anything. A sausage roll, the quiche, even some olives. Maybe it was just one quiche, but they've gone now, as you can see." We turned to see the last slice being eaten by an elderly gentleman, then he chatted with the woman before taking his bag of groceries and hobbling off, smiling.

"Then either we're too late, or nothing is wrong with the food." Melody grimaced, then crossed her arms and glared at me.

"Hey, why are you giving me the daggers? We both thought the same thing."

"Only because you put the idea in my head. This was dumb. Veronica, we're so sorry to come barging back here and stressing you out."

"It's not a problem, but it sure is a relief." She wiped her forehead with her sleeve and smiled at us.
